powered by zFeederAre you an author? Have you decided to publish your story on the internet or perhaps as an ebook? If you are you have probably already learned that in the United States of America publishing on the internet voids certain publishing rights that book publishers insist on having. This includes first publication rights.
The bottom line is that if you have published your story on the internet in any form chances are traditional publishers won't touch your book. What is the solution? Book writing in today's market is highly competitive and even if you get published your royalty checks probably only pay $0.10 to $0.20 per sale. I know several authors that have published books the traditional way and still need to work regular jobs on the side just to make a living.
Writing needs to be an act of love more than ever! I know that writing my first novel, Anarchist Knight:Apprentice was an act of love. I found out that writing is truly something that is very important for me whether I make money at it or not.
I tried a few writing communities on the internet including blogit.com, writing.com and spoiled ink.com. I tried putting episodes of my story out in these communities and learned some very interesting things. The first thing was that my poetry was very successful and popular. People on the internet love poetry and can't seem to get enough of it.
The second thing that I learned was long stories were not wanted! Short stories were alright but posting a long story was to give your book the kiss of death. No one would read it. In fact, it is very hard to find long stories any where on the internet at all.
Another dynamic I discovered was the “You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours” syndrome. There was an unspoken rule in these communities that suggested you read and comment on another writers material and they might reciprocate. Forget someone reading your story simply for the pleasure of it. Writers don't want to read other writers, they want their own stuff read! I was working two jobs and simply could not spend the time reading and commenting on other stories. I barely was able to post my own two page episodes every two days.
With the encouragement of a fellow artist and co-worker I began posting Anarchist Knight:Apprentice as a serial with updates every two days on different blogs. I had decided to go for readership rather than making money on book sales. I didn't know much about internet marketing or ebooks and decided that using blogs was the perfect solution for a serialadventure. I gave up on the writing communities and focused on blogs instead.
I began posting episodes of my story on: blogger.com,wordpress.com,livejournal.com,bravejournal.com,360.yahoo.com, greatestjournal.com,eponym.com,blogstream.com,blogster.com,journalspace.com, bloglines.com,xanga.com,spaces.live.com and myspace.com.
As time went on and I tracked the hits I discovered an interesting thing. I was getting readers! Each site would pick up a few every few days and some would stay while others would leave. I got encouraging comments that kept me going. Each blog site had its own internal method of promotion within the blogger community. I didn't need to be listed by search engines to find readers because they were stumbling onto my site accidently every day! I was doing the equivalent of door to door sales and it was working.
I thought about ways of increasing my readership and decided to serialize more ebooks and post them in their own blogs. I was only able to update them once weekly but noticed the same thing happening. I was getting readers and many were coming back to keep up with the story. It was a natural thing to link each blog together for added search engine ranking. I watched as google searches resulted in moving from eight pages of listings to sixteen on Anarcist Knight:Apprentice.
By this time I had over 100 blogs and they were not spam blogs. They were working blogs that produced valuable content. I had six ebooks and was publishing each one in 13 internet locations. By the conclusion of Anarchist Knight:Apprentice I estimated 5,000 readers were following that story and around 5,000 more were following the other five ebooks. That number keeps growing every day! I had found a way to get readers on the internet that had proven itself to be effective.
Getting readers and making money are two seperate things. I was getting readers but not making any money. I decided to place ads at the bottom of each episode and do affiliate marketing for Dragon Door products. These were products I believed in and knew were top value. Still it took about 1,000 hits on the ad to get one sale. I was getting at least 1,000 click throughs on the ads each month and around one sale each month. Not much money but it was encouraging to get something back for all of my effort. I was also learning a lot about internet marketing.
It was time to boost my rankings on the search engines! I needed more readers and common knowledge was to get high rankings on the search engines so people could find my sites. I couldn't do that with so many blogs. The more blogs I had the lower my ranking would be. I needed something else and decided upon rss feeds.
Many of my blogs had rss feeds available and I listed my ebooks in the rss directories. More readers showed up. That's when I hit upon the idea of Anarchist World. I could have all of my blogs pointing to one location. That one location would get good ranking from the search engines. Having an idea and making it happen are two different things. Anarchist World was not exactly what I had envisioned but people were checking it out and they still are. It is meant to be a community but it still functions as a focus for the search engines. People are interested in it and it will grow as more and more people are attracted to it. The growth of Anarchist World is inevitable.
Finishing my ebook and finding Lulu.com was the final step. Lulu.com is a print on demand publisher of books and ebooks. For the first time I had the ability to market ebooks as downloads and high quality paperback books. I knew that many people had lost interest in my story because it was taking so long and they didn't have the time to check in every other day for six months. By offering the entire ebook as a download I could sell some ebooks and make some money. I set the price of a download at $3.00. For the price of a cup of coffee and a donut anyone could get an awesome story to read at their own convenience.
If they liked it enough they could buy it as a quality paperback for $12.66! Some people really like books to hold in their hands. I know because I'm one of them! The beauty of my plan was its simplicity. People could read my entire book for free three pages at a time with ads over a period of six month or they could buy it at a reasonable price and read it right away! Its a good plan and its working! Serialization sells books! I've already sold several and have plans to market all six ebooks within the next year as I finalize them.
The final piece to the puzzle is Serialadventures . Serialadventures is a listing of quality books being posted as serials on the internet. It includes audience rating (General, Teen, Adult),Genre, Description,Information about the author and if the book is available as an ebook download or paperback. Even more exciting, Each listing is updated automatically through rss feeds. Your readers will know when you have posted a new episode! All of my blogs and Anarchist World are linked and pointing to Serialadventures! It is going to be listed in the major directories worldwide. I am going to aggressively market it to other authors that are looking for ways to sell their own books and ebooks.
